The severe snowfalls that have blanketed most of the territory of Bulgaria will gradually die out by the end of Wednesday, according to the National Institute of Meteorology.
Conditions will generally remain cloudy and foggy. Winds are predicted to ease later in the eastern regions of Bulgaria, becoming moderate by the evening. The Black Sea region will remain cold and windy.
During daytime, however, up to 10 cm of snow is expected in western districts.
The maximum daytime temperature in Sofia will be -3ºC, the southwest will be slightly warmer, at approximately 1ºC – 3ºC. The rest of the country will see a maximum of about -2ºC.
The district of Varna has been particularly hard hit, with flights cancelled because of poor visibility and snow. All schools in the area remain closed because of the bad conditions, and a state of emergency has been declared in several municipalities in the area.
Part of the Hemus highway from Varna to Slunchevo is closed to traffic, as are some secondary roads. Snow and moderate winds will continue to affect the mountains, and visibility will remain poor.
However, the weekend is expected to be the coldest of the winter so far. The temperature is expected to fall as low as -10ºC to -15ºC, particularly in the northeast and extreme west of Bulgaria.
In the northeast, the Saturday noon temperature will not exceed -10ºC, and the overnight temperature will fall to -15ºC, even to -18ºC in some place. Sunday is forecast to be even colder in the region.
Over the weekend, it will be slightly warmer in the southwest and southeast of the country, but temperatures there are also expected to remain below zero.
